There is a shot in this video where 2 women in burkha hold up a sign that says 'Kindness is Sexy'. In a world where major powers like the United States and the United Kingdom propagate a toxic islamphobia, especially in light of Donald Trump's comments on 'radical islam', it is important to keep in mind that we are humans and it's important to acknowledge and respect each other. When it comes to clothing, convention has defined only provocative clothing has 'sexy'. Women in Burkhas, which are incredibly conservative as full-body clothing, are often sidelined and are rarely called sexy. But we need to acknowledge that the only 'sexy' that matters is how we behave with each other, and remain kind to people.
While I was watching the opening credits, I observed that the creators have used shots of many beautiful and colourful scene, but what stood out for me was during the end of the credits where a woman is holding a board that says “Kindness is Sexy”. The reason that it caught my attention is because generally people consider kindness as a “weakness” and a sign of submission which is wrong and it is actually the exact opposite of being weak. Not everyone can step out of their comfort zone to help anyone if it’s ot for their own advantage and that’s not good and I liked the fact that they put that particular scene in the end because it stays in your mind and it’s a good message that actually encourages people to do acts of kindness and not be self serving.
My perspective about this video is that the world is moving so fast and is changing so drastically that one is missing out a lot of things in this world which may be good or bad. I havent seen this show nor the trailer so its a blank opinion just on the video given above. Also one of the thing I noticed is how different cities, cultures and colours are shown in the video i mean its filled with colours and contrasting landscapes. One of the things that caught my eye was the "mind the gap" sign which is one of the scene in the vid. I dont know why but that sign felt like a connection between the contrasting landscapes, cityscapes which were shown in the video
With no context whatsoever about the show, the first impression that I received from the opening credits was that it is a very inclusive show with representations of different cultures and sexualities and is basically very inclusive. However, the image that majorly stood out to me has nothing to do with this. This is a scene in the credits which show the writing on the pavement right beside the tracks of a subway saying 'Mind the Gap'. This is also interestingly the only image which focuses on a particular writing instead of the other visuals. This makes me think as to whether the image was placed there with another meaning than just the side of a Railway track. It can be understood as possibly a foreshadowingof something in the show by saying that a set of characters should maintain their distance with each other. Another way to perceive this is to think of this phrase as an advice for life. That one should always maintain a certain distance with others no matter how close they are.
While watching the video I had a multiverse of thoughts going through my mind as the pictures flashed by in a millisecond as if challenging me to believe that moments in life pass by in a millisecond. Coming to the picture which set me in a chain of thoughts was a snap of a scene from a metro station where the words, 'mind the gap' are written between the platform and the train. In my opinion this could be connected to the cycle of life and how we travel from one destination to another. Here the train serves as a medium of transportation to that destination which awaits the next stop in our lives. The line 'mind the gap' can be used as a symbol to caution the people who are travelling through this phase to be careful of choosing the right train. Even if they fail to choose the right train, they can always come back and start over. Swadha Prasad
This is a tough task considering how almost every single shot in the opening scene is so picturesque and crisp. From the bright oranges to blurring of individuals against the city scape, every image has a purpose and story of it's own. But since I have to choose, I'll pick the painted skulls, the street art (graffiti) of the man in the pillory and the last scene. Even though all the pictures were flashing by fast but it still clear. When compared to the others, only the last one is a bit unclear with the fog revealing the view of a half hidden city; The music gives it a thriller/ serious cop show feel to it (I haven't watched the show so I don't know what it is about). From the pictures and the music the show seems to be about world issues and traveling. The graffiti picture struck me as odd since pillory hasn't been used to punish people in a long, long time. The painted skulls seem to be from All Souls Day celebrations (Dia de los muertos).
I am going to respond to the 6th image in the scene at 0.28 seconds from an ecological point of view. One can see a lack of greenery in the still. A lot of houses can be seen in the same. The landscape is such that if one looks closely, we can observe that the trees have been cut to produce the land required for the houses. This can be seen as an effect of industrialization and increased consumerism. The houses are so closely packed which resembles a slum. This furthermore shows the power structure that is existent in society. The hegemonical power structures deny the rising of the lower class who believe that such a power structure should exist in society. Thus, one can look at it from an ecological as well as a marxist point of view.
The picture i selected was one where a person wearing a costume of a bear is seen smiling at the camera. It makes me think of how even something simple such as a smiling character of a bear can make someone happy. We take pleasure in seeing strange things, if we had seen a real bear on the road, it would create chaos. Yet when we see an inacurate imitation of an animal on the street, it makes people laugh and be happy.
The opening credits of sense 8 covers a large field of ideas. It goes back and fro to contrasting ideologies. It goes from nature to modernisation by depicting the natural beauty along with the modern humongous buildings. Within the short span of the creidt scene, it looks up on the ideas of LGBTQ by depicting certain gay and lesbian couples. The credit scene tries to embrace both the olden traditions ( showing of Hindu gods) and the modern ideas which is being accepted. I think the credit scene does a really great job in showing these many ideas in just around 2 minutes.
